Skin Care Regimen For Different Types Of Skin

June 21st, 2010

The face of every woman is different in skin type. Normal, dry, oily and combination – these are basically the 4 types. What sets each other apart is the amount of sebum produced. And this can be influenced by your genes, diet, lifestyle, season, and certain drugs. Oftentimes too, it’s influenced by the skin care you apply.

Before knowing how to take care of each skin type, it’s important to know what yours is. The normal type has an even tone and no visible pores or blemishes. There are no problem areas such as dry and oily, thus it’s less susceptible to breakouts or pimples. The dry type produces minimal sebum, thus it feels tight or taut most of the time, especially after cleansing. It’s prone to looking dull, flaking and development of red patches and fine lines.

An oily type has too much sebum produced. And this is what makes it shiny each and every time. The pores are large and very susceptible to getting clogged up, resulting to pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. A combination type, on the other hand, has parts that are dry and oily. The oily parts have excessive sebum, while the rest of the face can be dry. Taking care of such can be difficult at times.

Now let’s move on to proper caring of each one of them. You’re lucky if you got normal skin type as it’s the least fussy of all. But it still needs some proper daily regimen to maintain it. Use a facial cleanser that’s designed for normal skin type. Washing it all too frequently may also make it dry. Use a moisturizer to keep it soft and supple, as well as sunscreen when going outdoors.

A dry skin type requires some TLC on your part. That’s because it’s very prone to getting dry and irritated. Go for a facial cleanser formulated for dry skin type, with mild and all-natural ingredients. Avoid using bar soaps because they can make the dryness even worse. Never skip applying a moisturizer to seal in moisture, especially prior to applying make up.

An oily skin type needs to be washed frequently, about 2-3 times daily or even more. But washing it too much isn’t good at all. It will only trigger the sebaceous glands to produce lots and lots of sebum to deal with the dryness. Use a facial cleanser designed for dry skin. Using facial scrub from time to time will keep your pores clog-free, so it’s less likely to form pimples and other problems. Still you need to use a moisturizer, but stay away from oil-based types.

For a combination skin type, daily caring for it can be a bit complicated. That’s because the oily areas need a different treatment than that of the dry areas. The oily T-zone should be washed with a mild facial cleanser for oily skin. Exfoliation helps keep the pores from getting clogged up. Apply a matte moisturizer to keep shininess away. Achieve a smoother and even-looking skin by using a pore minimizing mask.

To know what skin care regimen is best for you, it’s essential that you know your skin type. No matter if you got a normal, dry, oily or a combination of oily and dry type, go for mild beauty products to avoid irritation.
