Can Saline Nasal Spray Help You Run Faster?

So, am I telling a joke? What is the connection between spraying something up your nose and running better? How in the world can there be a connection between saline nasal spray and running faster? I must say it does sound like a joke, but I mean it in all sincerity!

A while ago I became interested in what is called “Chi Running”. I became so interested in it that I actually went through the process of becoming a certified instructor. What we discover is that when you change the balance of the person and you change how they use their energy while they run, you can effect a change in how fast they run– and more importantly— whether they are likely to get an injury.

Lots of people every year get an injury of some sort while they are running. My goal as a Chi Running instructor is to eliminate these injuries and eliminate the setting that caused the injuries. One of the surprising things that has come up through the study of breathing is that how you breath can really affect the likelihood of an injury. So how is this all connected?

It may seem like an indirect connection but it is definite that how you breath affects how you move. Breathing through your nose activates a part of your nervous system that just causes the heart to beat slower. Breathing through your nose creates a limit on how much oxygen is available. If there is a “shortage” you will simply slow down. Do you see how this can affect your likelihood of an injury? If you give in and start mouth breathing (or mouth “gasping”) you will end up going faster than your system is prepared to handle which means you’re more likely to get tired or to get sloppy—this equals an increased risk from running. .

So how is this all connected to Saline Nasal Solution?? Well lots of people have allergies and lots of people react to the junk that’s in the air which can make it much more difficult to breath through your nose. So even if you wanted to breath through your nose, you might not be able to without a little help. Ionic Air Purifiers

One thing that has been grabbing the attention of the masses lately is ionic air purifiers. These air purifiers are strikingly different from the standard ones we are used to. The technology seems to work a lot more efficiently.

Have you ever stopped to think about all the things you are constantly breathing in? I know its not something I do often, after all breathing is so natural we don’t have to think about it at all. This doesn’t change the fact that there are all kinds of potential risks present in the air.

Nutrition and Good Nasal Health

The reason that I am writing this article is to help you understand the things besides nasal saline spray or nasal saline solution that will help you have good nasal health. After all, when your nose isn’t happy your body isn’t happy. Part of the concept of this article is to emphasize that things that are healthy for the body are also healthy for the nose.

There are many other things that affect the health of the nose. One of these is the general nutrition of the body. Nutrition of course affects every cell in the body. If you have bad nutrition your cells are not going to be as healthy. If you have good nutrition your cells are going to have much improved health. So while it is important to continue to do things like nasal saline spray for the nose, these other issues are important too.

So the nutrition of the body does directly affect the cells of the nose. It should be obvious to us that the body’s health affects the health of the nose and so nutrition to the body affects the nutrition of the nose. In spite of this obvious connection it is typical that people with chronic nasal problems or chronic sinus issues pay little attention to how and what they eat. If you eat junky food your sinus problems are going to be worse.

There are many many nutrients that are important for health. These nutrients can be supplemented to a diet. Now you can either supplement a good diet or supplement a bad diet. Which strategy do you think is more effective? It is a sad fact that many people who do supplement are in fact eating a bad diet most of the time. This guarantees that the nasal cells will not be healthy. Even if you do use a good nasal saline solution you will not have a good outcome in the long run.

There are over 50 key nutrients that are useful and helpful to supplement and all of them directly or indirectly play a roll in the immune function of the body. If any one of them are low, there is a bad effect on the body’s immune function. Medicinal Mushrooms in History

5,300 years ago, an injured and starving man from Val Venosta, Italy, fled across an Alpine glacier to escape pursuers. But his enemies caught up with him and with a practiced arrow-shot penetrated his shoulder blade and subclavian artery. Before long, he was dead from blood loss. “Oetzi the Iceman” was found mummified in 1991. On his person were pouches containing mushroom remedies, the oldest known proof in existence of medicinal mushrooms usage.

There is good reason to believe he carried both of these mushrooms along as natural remedies. Whipworm parasite eggs were found in Oetzi’s intestines. Birch polypore mushroom Piptoporus betulinus is a traditional de-worming remedy. The other mushroom in his possession, Tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius), may have been used to cauterize the wound on his right hand.

Both species belong to the group of mushrooms known as polypores, so named because of the many pores underneath. They often grow on trees, and to date no species is known to be poisonous to humans.

Few polypores are edible because they are hard and fibrous. But people in the Orient as well as the Occident have used them to treat a multitude of diseases for ages. Usually in the form of a tea that would be brewed and drunk; sometimes as a poultice placed on a wound or over an aching body part.

Native American traditions tell of using different kinds of polypore extracts to combat smallpox and other diseases introduced with the arrival of Europeans. This includes Reishi (Ganoderma resinaceum), Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), Birch polypore, and Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), as well as the now rare and endangered species Agarikon (Fomitopsis officinalis).

Although nearly extinct today, Agarikon was once common in the old-growth forests of ancient Europe. Greek physician Dioscorides referred to Agarikon as a remedy for tuberculosis in Materia Medica, 65 B.C. It’s the earliest record of a medicinal mushroom in European literature. Two millennia later, the historic use of Agarikon in Poland was put down in writing in the article Medicinal mushrooms in Polish Folk Medicine by K. Grzywnowics. Again, it included lung conditions, as well as rheumatoid arthritis and infected wounds.

While mushrooms have been utilized medicinally in the West, it pales in comparison to the adulation they have received in the Orient. Next follows three species of medicinal mushrooms from Asia, which simply have to be included in any article on medicinal mushrooms.

First out is Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), sometimes nicknamed the “Mushroom of Immortality” due to its wide range of healing properties. Reishi was mentioned in Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic from around 2,000 years ago. Many ancient Oriental temples and wood-carvings include images of this highly revered “cure-all” fungus.

Another Chinese medicinal mushroom known as Cordyceps was first described in the 200 A.D. book The Classic Herbal of the Divine Plowman. Cordyceps was, and still is, largely used as an aphrodisiac and to improve physical prowess in athletes, although modern research also indicates many other areas of potential usefulness.

Last but not least is the medicinal mushroom Shiitake, better known as a culinary delight. However, Shiitake is also one of the most research mushrooms for medical properties. Commercial cultivation of Shiitake began about a thousand years ago in China. Medicinal uses include immune enhancement, antibiotic and more. Shiitake extracted Lentinan polysaccharide is approved as an anti-cancer drug in Japan.

Medical research on mushrooms appears to have begun in the late 1960′s in Japan. It gained attention in the West through the research by Dr. Ikekawa, who found that families growing mushrooms had lower cancer-rates than other people in their communities. Since those early days, medical research into mushrooms has grown exponentially and is still increasing. Medicinal mushrooms are continuing to make history.

Does Nasal Saline Solution Make a Difference

Recent research has looked at the question of whether it makes any difference in the treatment of chronic sinusitis when nasal saline solution irrigation is done as opposed to just using the solution as a spray. This article is a review of that research.

In this research the condition of interest was chronic sinusitis. This means that there is a low grade infection going on in the sinuses. In some cases this infection has actually been going on for more than a year which is a long time to put up with symptoms.

Just to explain a little, there is a reason that the researchers were looking at whether it made a difference to add nasal irrigation to the treatment of the chronic sinus infection. The reason is that the infection will not be able to get better if the secretions blocking the sinus are not removed. The idea being studied was whether saline irrigation helped to move these secretions.

The researchers were interested in understanding not only does it help to use a nasal saline solution to irrigate out the nose and therefore to possibly remove some of the blockage of the sinus, but they also wanted to know whether the volume of solution made a difference. In fact, did it make a difference whether the nasal saline solution was irrigated liberally or just sprayed up into the nose?

The researchers found two different but related things. Not surprisingly they found that the nasal saline solution was helpful in treating the symptoms of a chronic sinus infection. Based on what we know about what is happening with a sinus infection this is not unexpected. What they also found, however, was that it did make a difference whether you used the nasal saline solution as an irrigation rather than as a spray—even if it is the exact same ingredient.

So to summarize, it does make a difference to use the saline nasal solution as an irrigation tool. It works and it works better than using it as a nose spray, even as a frequent nose spray. So if you have a chronic sinus infection you will very likely benefit from the regular use of a nasal saline solution
