Pros And Cons Of Botox

June 30th, 2010

Benefits of Botox is the commercial name for the purified, diluted form of botulinum toxin, which is produced by bacteria. Rivals to Botox are Azzalure (formerly known as Dysport) and ChiTox, which also contain botulinum toxin. It is injected into muscles underneath the skin to paralyse them, creating the effect of reduced wrinkles caused by excessive, repeated movement of these muscles. It is also used to stop excessive sweating in areas including the hand, foot and armpits and also to slim the face and make it look more contoured, Botox can be injected into the muscles along the jaw. In South Korea, Botox is used in the calves to make them look slimmer.

Many aesthetic doctors now dilute Botox to different concentrations so they can treat muscles of different sizes and also “freeze” these muscles to different degrees. A more concentrated solution would be used for precise application to the eyes of the patient while a diluted solution would be used along the jawline where the muscle is larger.

Recently, there has been a new procedure called the Micro-Botox which uses micro amounts of very diluted Botox. These are injected all over the face to reduce pore size and fine lines and improve the overall skin tone.

The effects of Botox is not really permanent. It can last for about 4 months. Botox has also been used to treat muscles affected by the Upper Motor Neuron Syndrome, for muscles with an impaired ability to effectively lengthen.

Some of the downside of Botox are muscle paralysis of the wrong muscle group and allergic reaction. There are also some who report bruising at the site of injection, but this is a knows side effect not of the toxin, but rather the mode of administration. It may also cause inappropriate facial expression or double vision.

Aesthetic Doctors Are Gearing In For A Boom In Their Field

June 14th, 2010

With the recession last year, you would think people would not even bother thinking about seeing aesthetic doctors for their superficial needs. Yet, with the pressure in the job market, people feel that there is the need to look more young and attractive to be competitive. So it was that the aesthetic doctors were the one smiling in the end.

People rush to these aesthetic doctors for minimally invasive procedures which have short to no recovery time, but can make you look younger and instill confidence on your job search. Channel News Asia even reported that most of these people are men. “Aesthetic service providers said business has increased some 30 per cent despite the recession.”

The main treatments that people go for are botox and other age reducing treatments. There are a few who really go for invasive surgery, however. “Observers said people are more willing to invest in aesthetic treatments to get an edge in the job market – especially during an economic downturn.”

Some of the most common treatments these aesthetic doctors perform are: Botox and Intense Pulsed Light or IPL. Botox is the commercial name for the purified, diluted form of botulinum toxin, which is produced by bacteria. It is injected into muscles underneath the skin to paralyse them, creating the effect of reduced wrinkles caused by excessive, repeated movement of these muscles. It is also used to stop excessive sweating in areas including the hand, foot and armpits. To slim the face and make it look more contoured, Botox can be injected into the muscles along the jaw.

IPL on the other hand, “is a treatment where an intense flash of light is emitted onto the skin. The light penetrates through to the inner layers where collagen which is a natural, fibrous protein that keeps skin smooth – is located and stimulates its growth.” It can remove freckles, sun spots and hair. It has become quite popular treatment in Singapore.

Put A Brighter Face Forward

Plastic surgery which is a medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and function is becoming more and more popular. Today patients in search of surgical options for body have a variety of options like the Chemical Peel which has been used for over 100 years to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells. Each year thousands of chemical peels are performed in the United States. A chemical peel uses a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells.

A chemical peel is not a substitute for a face lift. It cannot eliminate excessive or lax skin. But, in many cases a chemical peel is performed in conjunction with these procedures. Most chemical peels are performed as outpatient procedures in the doctor’s office or surgical suite.

Depending on your skin type and the desired results, your physician may recommend a superficial, medium, or deep chemical peel. Your surgeon will select the proper chemical or mix of chemicals (glycolic acid, beta lift, Jessner, TCA or trichloroacetic acid, or carbolic acid) and apply the solution to various areas of skin. Once applied, the chemical produces a separation and peeling of the outer layers of the skin. This stimulates the production of new skin from beneath.

Another form of plastic surgery today is Tumescent Liposuction that reduces breast size a few sizes with almost no visible scars. It is done under sedation with local anesthesia in less than 3 hours. Patients go home the same day usually with only minimal discomfort.

Some patients resume work in about 1 – 2 days and are back to full activity, including sports and dancing, within a week or two. Tumescent liposuction is the infusion of large volumes of a local anesthesia solution into the breasts. Your surgeon uses a small instrument, called a cannula, to suction away the unwanted fatty tissue. Breast reduction can make a dramatic change in your appearance and your outlook. A breast reduction can make your breasts smaller and firmer.

Also FotoFacial RF which can be used to rejuvenate the skin of the face, neck, chest and arms are popular these days. FotoFacial RF treatments are accomplished through a delicate handpiece attached to the AURORA/ELOS system.

When placed against the skin you will feel the cold tip. When the pulse of light and low energy radio frequency is administered there is a momentary sensation that is easily tolerated. Treatments take between twenty minutes to a half hour depending on the size of the area being treated.

One of the important things about surgery is to find the best one and of good experience as Dr. Kinney says “Plastic surgery is partially the art and science of restoring the form and function to people, to make them whole again after traumas like anomalies of birth, burns, accidents or cancer. He then went on to attend medical school at Tulane University and was further trained in general surgery and plastic surgery at UCLA.

The Wonders Of Modern Science And Plastic Surgery

May 30th, 2010
The common inferior pedicle breast reduction p...
Image via Wikipedia

This article sheds light on the improvements that Modern Technology has made to the lives of the lay person. It will touch upon various treatments like Asian Eye Surgery, Breast Reduction, hand-rejuvenation-treatments that you would want to read about and know more. Firstly let’s deal with Eye Surgery:

Do you eyes make you look tired, even though you’ve had a good night’s sleep? If your answer is yes, you’re not alone. Loose skin over your eyes and fat bags under your eyes can make you look more tired and older than you feel inside. Heavy eyelids can also create an unfriendly appearance.

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed. However, an Asian blepharoplasty has added potential for complications and unfavorable results if meticulous attention is not paid to aesthetics and proper surgical techniques. Your personal goals must be given adequate consideration. If you are of Asian descent and are considering eyelid surgery, Dr. Brian Kinney performs eyelid surgery for patients in our region with a detailed understanding of the ethnic variations in eyelid anatomy and the surgical skill necessary to maintain your ethnicity and achieve your individual goals.

When the procedure is performed alone, and not in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, it is generally done with sedation and local anesthesia. The eye area may be bruised and swollen for about 2 weeks. Patients should keep their heads up and place cold compresses on their eyes periodically. Antibiotic eye drops are generally prescribed for several days. Patients can’t wear contact lenses for about 2 weeks, since the eyelids may be stiff and sore. Make-up may be worn after about 10 days. The resulting thin scars, which will follow the natural contour of your eyelids, tend to fade in about 2 months.

Now let’s move on to Breast Reduction:

Large, sagging breasts can be uncomfortable, unhealthy and distracting from a woman’s appearance. Large breasts can also restrict certain activities. The best candidates are women with very large breasts who require physical relief. Other candidates for breast reduction include those patients with one breast significantly larger than the other. Those with indentations in their shoulders from tight bra straps and those who are self-conscious or dissatisfied with their oversized breasts are also excellent candidates.

Breast liposuction is a safe alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery. It may be performed with twilight sleep anesthesia combined with local anesthesia. Since the female breast is about 50% fat, a 1 – 3 cup reduction in size can be obtained using liposuction alone. Liposuction of the breast enables the surgeon to remove fatty tissue, but not glandular tissue. With this procedure, most patients experience a quicker recovery time with minimal scarring as compared to a traditional breast reduction. Depending on your breast size, breast liposuction might be an option to consider.

A breast reduction can make a dramatic change in your appearance and your outlook. A breast reduction can make your breasts smaller and firmer. Many patients find a new enjoyment in sports, exercise, dancing, or even just walking.

Lastly the treatment that most elderly women and men would consider :

Hands are one of the first parts of the body to show signs of aging because they receive so much exposure. Sunlight, the elements and the natural aging process all contribute to the development of darkened spots, unsightly veins, wrinkles and fine lines, precancerous growths and loss of fatty tissue. Some procedures for the same are as mentioned below -

Prescription-strength skin care like Retin-A and other creams are proven to significantly affect the aging process.

Sclerotherapy was developed in the 1920s. During the procedure a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein through a micro-needle. The tiny needles generally cause very little pain. The sclerosing solution causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually disappear.

Fractional skin resurfacing treats spots and fine lines with the delivery of microbeams of light to form new, soft, healthy skin with reduced blemishes.

Laser treatments give Dr. Kinney precise control as the procedure gently removes fine lines and wrinkles, unsightly veins, and age spots to reveal smooth, fresher-looking hands.

These are some of the procedures performed by Dr. Kinney who has recently published a textbook of plastic surgery. He has along with other distinguished Professors/co-editors from medical schools at Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, Yale, the University of Michigan, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin co-edited a new 2,000 page, standard textbook in plastic surgery with over 120 chapters and 250 authors.

What’s New In Plastic Surgery

May 30th, 2010

It used to be that cosmetic surgery was for the over fifty crowd. Patients waited until they saw wrinkles and then asked for “the works.” Their results were dramatic, but unfortunately, everyone could tell they just had surgery. Today, nearly one-third of that seeking facial rejuvenation surgery is between 35 and 50 years old.

Wrinkles and frown lines often first appear in the brow and forehead area. It is used to smooth out the wrinkles and correct drooping brows and heavy lids to provide a younger, friendlier appearance. A brow lift can be performed alone or with other cosmetic procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or laser skin resurfacing.

Sometimes, even after a great night’s sleep, it can be hard to feel alive and vibrant when one looks at those tired, drooping eyes looking back at you from the mirror. The loose skin over the eyes and the fat bags under the eyes makes one look more tired and older than one feel inside. Each year thousands of women and men choose eyelid surgery to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance.

The doctor performs eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, for patients to correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a face-lift, a brow lift or laser skin resurfacing.

Loose skin over one’s eyes and fat bags under the eyes can make one look more tired and older than you feel inside. Heavy eyelids can also create an unfriendly appearance.

There are numerous differences between Caucasian and Asian eyes. Most of them are unseen muscular and other underlying tissue differences, such as the increased fat content and somewhat thicker skin of Asian eyes. Often the crease of the upper eyelids is incomplete or non-existent, allowing the skin to hang over the lashes and conceal much of the eye.

Dr. Brian Kinney performs eyelid surgery for patients in our region with a detailed understanding of the ethnic variations in eyelid anatomy and the surgical skill necessary to maintain ethnicity and achieve individual goals.

Reconstruct Your Beauty

May 30th, 2010

Plastic Surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the appearance and self-esteem of an individual. Some plastic surgery procedures are gaining popularity these days. One of them is Liposuction which removes unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body. The procedure is meant for body contouring. It is not a treatment of obesity. A suction tube is inserted through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location on the skin. With a high pressure vacuum, fat cells are extracted through this tube.

With the Tumescent Technique, large volumes of saline solution, local anesthesia, and adrenaline are infused into the fatty area being treated to cause swelling. This enables your surgeon to maneuver a small instrument called a cannula, connected to a vacuum machine, superficially under the skin. The cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue through tiny incisions.

Your surgeon gently moves it around under your skin and suctions away the unwanted fatty deposits. The most frequent areas treated by liposuction in men are the “love handles”, breasts, abdomen and neckline. In women they include: thighs, hips, buttocks, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks, and double chins. Some women elect to have their fat recycled through lipo-augmentation.

Another one is Male breast reduction which is performed for Gynecomastia, a medical word from the Greek words for “woman-like breasts,” which affects one out of every ten men. Enlarged breasts on young boys last only a few years and are generally resolved by age eighteen. Enlarged breasts on a man, however, can be uncomfortable, as well as socially and psychologically devastating.

Gynecomastia may be associated with obesity, hormonal metabolism imbalance, liver disease or medicinal causes. Prior to choosing a surgical solution to gynecomastia, a period of diet and exercise is recommended. Should that fail, the doctor performs male breast reduction for patients in the region to treat this condition. Male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis using a general anesthesia. The procedure can last from 1 – 3 hours depending on the extent of correction.

Also varicose veins treatment is quite in demand these days. They are performed for those veins that have become enlarged and tortuous. The term commonly refers to the veins on the leg, although varicose veins can occur elsewhere. Veins have leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards (retrograde).

Leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart, against the effects of gravity. When veins become varicose, the leaflets of the valves no longer meet properly, and the valves do not work. This allows blood to flow backwards and they enlarge even more. Varicose veins are most common in the superficial veins of the legs, which are subject to high pressure when standing. Besides cosmetic problems, varicose veins are often painful, especially when standing or walking. They often itch, and scratching them can cause ulcers.

Today it has become a necessity to go in for the right treatment as Dr. Kinney says it is the most important step to achieving the results you want for your appearance. Dr. Kinney is a staff member of many hospitals in such as St. John’s Hospital and Health Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Olympia Medical Center.

Reflect The Inner You

May 30th, 2010

Today plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are topics of growing interest and new plastic surgery techniques are constantly being developed and introduced. Once only for the wealthy, today people from all walks of life are having plastic surgery because of the great enhancements it can provide to quality of life.

AlloDerm which is a dermal graft/implant material is made from donated skin and processed by the LifeCell Corporation. It is strictly regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as is any other donated human tissue material indicated for transplantation, including kidneys, hearts, corneas, bone and other tissues generously donated by individuals or their families. With AlloDerm, the epidermis, or top layer of cells, and the cells in the dermis are removed from the donor tissue as part of the purification process. All that remains is a collagen framework that provides strength to the skin.

AlloDerm contains no cells that can cause rejection or inflammation. Once the AlloDerm graft or implant material is in place, it gradually becomes a natural part of your body. Initially, AlloDerm was used as a skin replacement for burn patients. Quickly, plastic, reconstructive, dermatologic, oral and cosmetic surgeons worldwide recognized the benefits provided by this natural soft tissue replacement when used as an implant to repair or replace damaged or inadequate dermal tissue.

Next type of plastic surgery is breast enhancement or augmentation which is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States today. It changes the appearance of a woman’s breasts. A doctor performs breast augmentation for patients to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts, or breasts that have decreased in size after a woman has had children. Recent studies have supported the safety of saline breast implants. Should a saline implant leak, the salt water is safely reabsorbed by the body as the implant deflates. Most of the implant companies provide replacement warranty.

Also facial scarring is a matter of concern these days, it is usually caused by pervasive cystic acne, trauma, burns, surgery or a result of aggressive chicken pox. Scars form as part of the body’s healing process whenever multiple layers of skin are injured. Facial scars can negatively affect a patient’s self-esteem, as well as his or her business and social life.

Many of these patients seek treatment to improve the appearance or texture of their facial scars. Today, to treat this problem the options include excisional surgery, punch grafting, soft tissue augmentation, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and dermabrasion.

It is very important to choose the right doctor for getting a plastic surgery done as Dr.Kinney says ” You must find someone with whom you can easily communicate so that trust, comfort and the utmost confidence are maintained.” During the Bosnian war, Dr. Kinney led surgical relief missions and was received in the Presidential Palace in Zagreb, Croatia.

Wrinkle Filler: How It Works

May 30th, 2010

Technology is improving exponentially and with it improving the beautification techniques. There was a time when people had no other option but to be content with age lines and wrinkles, but now things are different. With the latest wrinkle filler, one can bid adieu to the age lines and wrinkles.

The wrinkle filler, which at times is also referred as dermal filler by the dermatologists and other medical professionals, can reduce wrinkles either temporarily or permanently and can improve the skin’s radiance. Permanent fillers cannot be removed once they have been injected without scarring face tissue and, as they are prone to cause adverse reactions like infections and swelling; many specialists do not advocate this course of treatment.

Instead, temporary wrinkle fillers are usually administered. These are much safer and the majority of adverse reactions reported by patients are limited to short-term redness, lumpiness and mild bruising. A temporary treatment lasts anything from two months to two years, depending on which filler is used and where wrinkles are located.

The filler is injected into the skin to literally fill wrinkles and lines from beneath. They can be used anywhere on the face, although fillers that use human or animal fat should never be used to treat forehead wrinkles as there is a danger of the fat entering the blood and potentially causing blindness. The procedure takes somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes and are relatively painless, especially if a local anesthetic or anaesthetizing cream is applied beforehand.

Broadly speaking there are two types of wrinkle fillers one is the ones that use synthetic materials, and those that use animal fat or human fat. The most common component of synthetic filler is hyaluronic acid which is used in different quantities to treat different types and depths of wrinkle.

Injected fat to fill wrinkles is another options, however the risk of infections and treatment failure are higher. Most patients opt to have the donor fat removed from their stomach or thighs. This fat is then frozen and gradually transferred to their problematic wrinkle zones every six to eight weeks for up to a year. The process of removing the fat is carried out under local anesthetic, as are the series of injections.

Before you think about getting facial wrinkle filler, you should step back and evaluate the pros and cons of them. Some people think that facial wrinkle fillers are a scam, while others think they are amazing. Different people have different opinions. According to Dr. Brian M. Kinney a famous plastic surgeon, the process is quite secure and people who have confidence in it should go for it.

Liposuction & Facial Liposuction

May 30th, 2010

Are you tired of sweating on the treadmill and living on celery sticks and brown rice? Do you watch reality TV shows where overweight individuals undergo seemingly magical transformations in under an hour? The popularity of reality TV shows where people undergo liposuction to get rid of those extra pounds have made plastic surgery more mainstream than ever, and why not?

Liposuction seems like a pretty attractive alternative to sweating it out in the gym. Liposuction is a successful cosmetic procedure that removes fat deposits from targeted areas on the body. Liposuction has many uses, most typically for the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips and arms. A good candidate for liposuction should have realistic expectations about the results of this procedure as well as these basic qualities: Average or slightly above-average weight, firm, elastic skin good overall health, concentrated pockets of fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise.

Facial liposuction is a youth-enhancing cosmetic procedure that is quickly becoming a popular choice among men and women alike. Some patients are genetically predisposed to carry excess fat in their jaw line, creating a jowl-ed appearance. Liposuction surgery is not a treatment for obesity. Liposuction surgery can be of many types such as, facial liposuction and stomach liposuction. Liposuction Surgery should be thought of as a way of improving the contour and shape of the body rather than as an easy way of losing weight. Facial Liposuction may be done alone. In older patients, it may produce optimal results when combined with a face-lift, brow-lift, eyelid or nose surgery. This surgical liposuction procedure may involve either an intra-oral or extra-oral incision.

Facial liposuction does present some possible risks to the patient and will be discussed prior to the operation. Asymmetry, hematoma, lumpiness, and numbness are possible. Facial liposuction in most cases is able to make a dramatic change in the way a person looks by removing the excess fat from under the cheeks, chin and neck. Facial and neck liposuction is an effective liposuction procedure for removing localized fatty deposits in the under-surface of the neck area and the neck region.

Chin liposuction is a procedure that could eliminate the excess fats and loose, saggy skin of upper necks. Just like other liposuction procedures, chin liposuction involves minimum pain, allows for a faster recovery time and provides an effective way of getting rid of unwanted fats on the chin.

Breast Reconstruction – General Information: Breast reconstruction is the rebuilding of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease. This procedure involves the use of implants or relocated flaps of the patients own tissue to create a natural looking breast and reformation of a natural looking areola and nipple. The reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal. Breast reconstruction usually takes multiple operations, which are spread out over weeks or months.

The breast can also be reconstructed by surgically moving a section of skin, fat and muscle from one area of body to another. Whether you decide to have breast reconstruction depends on own individual case, medical condition, general health, lifestyle, emotional state, and breast size and shape. You may consider consulting family, friends, breast implant support groups, and breast cancer support groups to help you in making this decision.

You may have some temporary or permanent muscle weakness and difficulty with movement in back and shoulder. You will have a scar on back, which can usually be hidden in the bra line. You may also have additional scars on reconstructed breast.

Enhance Image And Self Esteem

May 30th, 2010

Plastic surgery remodels or restores the personality of an individual .Not long ago, a Plastic Surgery was considered by many to be reserved for movie stars and celebrities. Today, it is not just for the rich and famous.

Face-lift, a form of plastic surgery is one of the most well accepted and most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. A face-lift, technically known as a rhytidectomy is a procedure which gives more youthful appearance. It usually involves the removal of excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues, and the redraping of the skin on the patient’s face and neck.

Facelifts are helpful for eliminating loose skin folds in the neck and laxity of tissues in the cheeks.A facelift requires skin incisions; however, the incisions in front of and behind the ear are usually inconspicuous. Hair loss in the portions of the incision within the hair-bearing scalp can rarely occur. In men, the sideburns can be pulled backwards and upwards, resulting in an unnatural appearance if appropriate techniques are not employed to address this issue.

Achieving a natural appearance following surgery in men can be more challenging due to their hair-bearing preauricular skin. In both men and women, one of the signs of having had a facelift can be an earlobe which is pulled forwards and/or distorted.

Also Hands are one of the first parts of the body to show signs of aging because they receive so much exposure. Sunlight, the elements and the natural aging process all contribute to the development of darkened spots, unsightly veins, wrinkles and fine lines, precancerous growths and loss of fatty tissue. Hand rejuvenation makes your hands look younger. It can be used to rid the hands of a skeletal look and reverse the signs of aging. A procedures which is used for Hand rejuvenation is Chemical peel which in a variety of forms can be used to produce a separation and peeling of the outer layers of the skin. The new skin beneath is smooth and practically blemish-free, with reduced fine lines, wrinkles, spots and sun damage.

Also the procedure that is used for Hand rejuvenation is Sclerotherapy that was developed in the 1920s. During the procedure a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein through a micro-needle. The tiny needles generally cause very little pain. The sclerosing solution causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually disappear.

Today Tummy Tuck or abdominoplasty which flattens a protruding abdomen by tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall and removing excess fatty tissue and skin is also very popular. This surgical procedure is a common one and can benefit men and women who are bothered by a protruding abdomen. Patients whose weight has been stabilized in their weight loss program or who feel they are at their ideal weight are the best candidates for a tummy tuck. Many patients combine their tummy tuck with other cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.

A full tummy tuck involves an incision around the belly button and another incision that runs from hip to hip. The entire abdominal wall is tightened with permanent sutures, and the excess skin and fat is removed. A mini tummy tuck is usually performed in conjunction with liposuction of the upper abdomen and the flank areas.

Good results can be expected when one is careful of the doctor they choose as Dr Kinney says the process of Plastic surgery should be as comfortable as possible. Dr. Kinney has authored numerous articles for journals, magazines and co-edited a new 2,000 page, standard textbook of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kinney attended medical school at Tulane University and was further trained in general surgery and plastic surgery at UCLA.
