Teeth Whitening Systems For Home Use

April 17th, 2010

There are numerous safe teeth whitening consumer products on the market these days that you might use at home. Pretty much all of these do normally contain some type of peroxide based blend that helps to eradicate any kind of yellowing or stains from your teeth. Below we take a look at the types of home kits available that let you whiten your teeth at a small percentage of the cost of having this process carried out by your dentist.

First is the use of teeth whitening trays. These kits use a mouth protector / tray onto which the peroxide solution in gel form is put. You then place the tray over the teeth and then allow it to stay in place for a couple of hours. Most of these whiteners are intended for you to carry out the treatment two times a day for 1 to 2 weeks, while others need the tray to stay fitted at night and remain on until the next morning.

Also is the treatment of white light in teeth whitening. Usually these kits come with a gel that contains a peroxide solution in it. You apply this right to the teeth and then place the white light over your mouth. The warmth that the white light device gives off then accelerates the procedure that then results in you having brighter white teeth and a smile to be proud of for a long time. This technique seems to be effective at removing stains and discoloration on the surface and also stains that are set in as well.

Using teeth whitening swabs is not only the easiest of all the consumer products to use when it comes to you wanting to get a great looking smile but also what many think to be the safest teeth whitening application process. It is also one of the least expensive ways of having your teeth looking white. They come with cotton swabs that have a mixture sealed in them and a bottle containing powder built up of magnesium peroxide and aluminum tri-hydroxide.

After you break the the seal on the cotton swab you touch the end into the powder and then apply this over every tooth. When the powder and solution on the swab come into contact with each other oxygen is generated and this will help to remove the stains from the teeth.

Using a teeth whitening procedure it should be OK-ed through your dentist since everyone’s teeth are not the same as well as other factors affecting our health.

Differentiating Between Dental Braces And Retainers

April 17th, 2010

There are those who would conclude that retainers and braces are entirely interchangeable names, all because both devices have the similar purpose of treating dental irregularities. It is a wrong opinion, nevertheless.

Braces are the most popular gadgets used to reposition crooked teeth into a straight alignment. Braces are attached in such manner that a set amount of pressure is applied on the teeth so that the teeth are nudged gently into a particular direction. The braces have to be used for an extended period of time in order for the corrective measure to work.

Braces are offered in metal, ceramic, or plastic materials, with metal being the most common material used for braces. The ceramic or plastic braces are sometimes chosen for aesthetic purposes. A dentist will be able to give out detailed info about what braces material will be more suited for a person.

The process of installing braces requires the orthodontist to attach tiny metal brackets (or ceramic, as the preference of the patient may be), using specialized bonding materials, to the teeth. Then, arch wires (composed of either metal alloys or durable elastic) are installed through the brackets, serving as the path or direction that the teeth are supposed to move to.

The changing position of the teeth as the treatment period gets along would mean several visits to the orthodontist.

A retainer is mainly used to keep the teeth alignment in place after the teeth irregularity has been repaired with a braces. The retainers permit the teeth to set into its permanent position. People who presume that retainers are bulky need no longer fret. There are retainer designs out there that allow for optimal comfort and near-invisibility.

Control Costs Of Dental Needs

March 14th, 2010

The desire to maintain high standards of oral health needs to be weighed against expenses. On average, someone who goes to the dentist will provide the dentist with $800 of revenue, some of which is covered by insurance and some of which by individual payments. There are also costs associated with the purchase of dental products, for example electric brushes, and night guards molded to individual mouths.

One effective way to economize is to make sure that one is getting the minimal amount of work needed for maintaining good oral health with positive long term impact. Sometimes cosmetic needs arise but can be put off until later, but other times cosmetic needs and basic dental needs go hand-in-hand in cases such as a lost tooth. Ask the dentist for a cost-benefit analysis in terms of long term oral health, and make clear that aesthetics come later.

An example of this might be the following. Suppose one is afflicted by a large cavity that has affected a large fraction of the enamel of a tooth. There may be two options. In one, the cavity is filled and a porcelain cap or metal cap covers it for further strengthening and protection. In the other, the cavity is filled and left alone. The first option is more expensive and longer-term, but the second is much less expensive and also lasts many years.

Astute patients will also know to avoid some cosmetic procedures unless absolutely necessary. For example, teeth become stained by coffee or smoking. The stains may be removed by whitening methods. However, it turns out that whitening procedures differ quite a bit in cost because of the differential use of underlying technology. Old methods allow for submersion in carbamide peroxide whereas newer methods incorporate the use of powerful lasers to activate and remove stains.

Procedures may cost a lot of money at once, but buying oral health products is a drain on finances over time. To save money, look for bulk discounts at large wholesale suppliers like Costco. Buying toothbrushes or electric brush refills at the supermarket misses out on leveraging your money with volume purchases. However, make sure to replace a brush when the bristles start fraying as it’s an indicator of reduced brush efficacy.

The newer motorized toothbrushes provide added value because of vibratory motions that are more effective at plaque removal. Prices of toothbrushes occupy a rather large range meaning that consumers can elect to look at different models for different price points. Find one that suits your purpose without going overboard. Consider sacrificing on some features that are extraneous. A battery operated motorized brush can be half the price of one that uses fancy recharging circuitry.

Jaw Pain? Seek Immediate Dental Help

February 21st, 2010

When I was a younger man, I remember situations where I was experiencing jaw pain. And like any other young boy, I dismissed those flashes of pain as something that would go away. Now remember, I was too young to think any more of the pain, but was old enough to know that pain that emanates from the mouth requires dental care.

The pain throbbed incessantly. It was a pain that was very much different as opposed to the pain one might have if one has a toothache. I know the kind of pain that would merit a dentist’s attention, and this jaw pain I was having was not it. I shrugged it off as some kind of muscle pain.

Big booboo. After a few days, the left side of my mouth was swollen and I couldn’t open my mouth to even sip a glass of iced tea. After some trepidation, I finally agreed to see a doctor. It was a general health doctor, or whatever you call it, and his prognosis was, I should see a dentist. I was adamant and refused to see a dentist since I was so sure that it was muscle pain. I’m sure you guys understand my fear of dentists, after all, who among us didn’t fear them at such a young age right?

Finally, I agreed. The pain continued and when the dentist examined me, he told me that it was because of an abscess in a tooth that spread throughout my jaw. He was asking me why I waited so long before I went to him and I just shrugged. Apparently, if the abscess was left untreated, the pain would go away, but then would come back worse than ever and would be beyond help.

So let me tell you, dear readers, if you fell some kind of jaw pain, and you are not sure what it is. Take the safest route and visit your nearest dentist. Sometimes it may be just muscle pain, but just to be sure, it may be something happening in your mouth. Your best bet would be to get proper dental treatment every six months so that your dentist can evaluate whatever it is that’s happening to your mouth.

Aside From Looking Good, What Are The Other Benefits Of Straight Teeth?

February 16th, 2010

Diseases of the gum can cause the back teeth to loosen, thus making it very difficult for an individual to chew. Their diet can be limited, which simply means that they are not taking in a balanced diet. Having straight teeth could help correct the problem with unbalanced diet.

With straight teeth, articulating words correctly is usually never an issue. Sometimes, men and women are asked to speak in public and find out that they cannot be effective and credible speakers if their teeth are misaligned. Syllables, certain letters, and words are pronounced differently, oftentimes causing misinterpretations and uneasy situations.

Definitely, straight teeth can affect not only a person’s physical beauty but also one’s quality of life.

Primary Factors That Cause Dental Irregularities

February 16th, 2010

Many of us exist with different types of dental irregularities, such as crookedness, uneven spacing, protrusion, and minor overcrowding. Many dental experts have said that most adults all over the world have teeth alignment issues. Over the years, they get used to the irregularity of their teeth that they hardly feel the discomfort caused by this.

Oral aberrations can cause a person to lose self-confidence. Often persons with dental issues cover their mouths when they talk, and they rarely smile in order to hide their flaw. In addition, dental irregularities can affect how a person chews, making it necessary for the person to be meticulous about his or her diet.

Dental irregularities are often the gift of genetics. Someone in the family may have protruding front teeth, and this could be passed on to the children. Aside from heredity, however, outside components may cause dental irregularities. Some of these causes are the following:

Trauma – Playing rough and coupled with minor accidents can cause children to loose or fracture their teeth. These fractured teeth will be replaced but may bond with the bone that surrounds it. This is called ankylosis – the abnormal fusing of the tooth to the bone – and it is a primary reason children grow up with crooked teeth.

Thumb sucking or pacifier use – Kids who suck their thumbs or use pacifiers for a time longer than necessary, they could risk having forward-extending front teeth when they grow up.

Early loss of baby teeth – If primary teeth are lost prematurely, the secondary teeth will have no point of reference once they come through the gum’s surface, causing crookedness.

Some individuals view dental imperfections as small annoyances that they have managed to treat it as minor annoyances. However, it is still good practice to have regular dental checkups to make sure that the dental flaws do not cause complications later on.

Spotting Dental Irregularities

February 16th, 2010

In orthodontic terms, a bite is how the lower and top rows of teeth are aligned over each other when the mouth is closed. Bite misalignment is one of the most popular causes why some people seek the help of dentists. Bite misalignment does not look good. It can also cause periodontal and teeth problems, as well as create problems in the way an individual chews or speaks.

Bite misalignments have several categories, and the ones enumerated below are some of the examples.

1. Open bite. When the top and bottom rows of the teeth do not meet when a person bites down, this is called an open bite. The bottom row of teeth exerts more pressure that the upper one. If there is an open bite, the back teeth may wear out prematurely because chewing exerts more force on the lower row of teeth.

2. Cross bite. With this type of misalignment, the upper row of the teeth is set out (or in) the lower row. This is the type of misalignment that is usually dealt with by orthodontists because the condition makes it difficult for a person to chew properly.

3. Under bite. This is described by the projection of the bottom row of teeth farther ahead of the top row of teeth.

4. Crowding. This teeth irregularity can sometimes occur if the permanent teeth grow out within a tight area of the dental arch.

5. Gaps. Lost teeth and extraordinarily undersized teeth could create spacing problems.

There are several orthodontic methods that can fix the issue of bite irregularities.

Braces and retainers are two of the most known methods of correction. When fitted correctly, these gadgets give an exact amount of force over a certain span of time to help teeth move to the appropriate position. In some cases, however, the teeth may have already set deep into the bone; an orthodontic surgeon might recommend surgery to fix problems like this.
