Types Of Foods You Should Not Feed Your Pet Canine

March 8th, 2010

You can feed a dog just about anything, and odds are, the dog will eat it up without thinking twice. This is a cause of concern for pet owners, as there are many types of foods that will do damage to the health of a dog. It’s important to learn which foods should be avoided to keep dogs healthy.

Garlic and onions, and anything that may contain them, should not be given to dogs. Onion and garlic can damage the red blood cells of both cats and dogs. This includes any raw ingredients, powders, and products that have been prepared with trace amounts of either substance. An example would be with baby food, which often contains a trace amount of either garlic or onion for flavoring purposes.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that can also harm your dog. You find xylitol in most types of gum, as it is an artificial sweetener. It is also the main ingredient in alternative sugar substitutes. The sweetener can cause liver failure if eaten in moderate quantities, so it’s best to avoid your dog eating it even in small amounts.

Dairy products and dogs do not mix very well. There are some dogs that are able to “stomach” dairy products, but not every dog has the proper digestive system to take care of the enzymes in most dairy products. This includes milk, sour cream, cheese, and products derived from any of these products. If you notice your dog has diarrhea, it’s possible the problem is with dairy.

One of the biggest wrongs that pet owners could engage in would be to give a dog caffeine or chocolate. Chocolate is known to have caffeine in it, and the caffeine can quickly cause nervous system problems and heart problems. Caffeine may also speed up the heart of the dog, which could cause a serious problem if the dog gets worked up and uses the extra energy to run around. No chocolate or caffeine at all should ever be given to a dog.

Dog diets are hard to balance, since every breed of dog can be different. Each individual dog will also have different likes, tastes, and personality. Focus on building a well-balanced diet instead of feeding a dog table scraps or solely “human food.” Otherwise the proteins and fats may be off balanced, and could lead to health issues later on.

In Conclusion

Patience in learning what your dog can handle is key. Always research the food you are giving your dog before actually feeding the dog. It’s always best to stay safe rather than have a dog with severe health problems. Dogs are a man’s best friend, and should be treated as such.

Information Regarding Gastroenterology And Your Health

February 21st, 2010

A gastroenterologist is a doctor that specializes in the function of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tree. These areas must be specially treated, especially if a patient is experiencing severe problems with that part of the body.

Even though a sick patient can see a physician for practically anything, they do not have the knowledge or ability to accurately diagnose certain things. A gastroenterologist is capable of treating and diagnosing complicated disorders that take place in the liver, colon, pancreas, and other areas of the abdomen.

The symptoms and problems they can treat are rather broad. If an individual is experiencing severe abdominal pain, he may need to seek treatment from someone specializing in gastroenterology. Indigestion, hepatitis, hiatal hernias, as well as rectal bleeding can also be treated by a gastroenterologist.

It is extremely important that you do get help in the event that you experience severe symptoms associated with major gastrointestinal disorders. For example, liver disease must be caught early on before severe damages take place. Ulcers and colon cancer must also be taken care of by a specialist as soon as possible to ensure a safe recovery. While a regular physician can treat ulcers or constipation, he may not feel comfortable doing so. Some doctors also do not have extensive expertise in the gastrointestinal field of medicine.

Sometimes a referral is necessary. An exam by your regular physician can indicate that something is indeed wrong. In this case he can provide you with the name and number of local doctors that may be able to help your condition. From that point you will undergo a few tests to reveal what the problem is. Depending on the problem you may be required to see a higher up specialist in the field, or undergo surgery.

Surgery isn’t always necessary but for many of the major problems associated with the gastrointestinal tract, it is necessary. Colon cancer for example, would require removal of polyps or tumors. Constipation would not require surgery but rather a gentle treatment. Other problems are simple to cure, while rare diseases and life threatening illnesses can be quite risky and difficult to treat.

In Conclusion

Pain, abnormal symptoms, and other problems are signs that should not go overlooked. If you suspect that you have a specific condition, seeking immediate treatment can save your life. These doctors are trained to help you recover and become the healthiest you can be once again!
