Skincare Tips – Moisturizing

July 30th, 2011

There are many popular moisturizing ingredients including collagen and hyaluronic acid. People expect instant moisturizing effect from the application of skincare products that contain such ingredients. In fact, hyaluronic acid helps lock water in skin, but not hydrates it. Therefore, it works best together with hydrating ingredients like jojoba oil and Vaseline. Otherwise, it may turn your skin even drier.

Facial mask is another way to hydrate your skin. It provides an instant boost of moisture in skin. But, unless you apply moisturizing skincare products (essence and cream) afterwards, the moisture may not be locked in skin. Besides, your skin may be irritated by the large amount of nutrients of facial masks.

Facial toner, though is in liquid form, it is not designed for hydrating skin. Facial toner is the last step of cleansing in western skincare concept while it is the first step of skincare in eastern skincare concept. In fact, it is the skincare product that helps the absorption of skincare products that are applied afterwards.

Facial sprays are largely composed of water and thermal water. Though these sprays provide instant moisture to skin, they do not provide a good moisturizing effect (locking water in skin). It is because facial sprays contain large amount of trace minerals but not moisturizing ingredients. Therefore, without proper moisturizing action afterwards, frequent spraying may lead to drier skin.

All-in-one products (skincare products that provide multiple functions such as whitening, moisturizing, anti-aging) seem powerful, but actually it is not. With the many functions of an all-in-one skincare product, the efficacy of each function is probably reduced. Therefore, it is not advised to hydrate and moisturize your skin with all-in-one products during dry weather.

Most people consider essences provide more powerful effect in moisturizing. That is why essences are sold at a higher price. In fact, essences provide deep down moisturizing effect. But, creams and moisturizers help lock water on the outer layer of skin. Without moisturizer, skin may be dry (applying essences only).

Key Skin Enemies

June 13th, 2011

Skin’s enemies are all around the environment. Some of them cause more damages to our skin than others. Free radicals are the biggest energy of our skin. Free radicals are unstable molecules and atoms formed naturally during metabolism. Because of their instabilities, they have tendency to look for and combine with anything that is stable.

The effect of the combination of unstable free radicals to skin cells can be “disastrous”. Skin cells become injured and irritated and different cell parts, cell walls ad collagen fibres may die. But, young and healthy defence system can scavenge and neutralize these free radicals.

The problem lies in the significant number of free radicals produced thorough air pollution, cigarette smoke, pesticides, poor diet, illness and stress. Such high number of free radicals exceeds the amount that our natural defence system can absorb. Therefore, our skin becomes dry, inelastic and sensitive as a result.

Sunlight is not only a source of free radicals, but also UV radiations and heat. UV radiations from the sun cause significant damages to protein fibres. It may also thicken the epidermis and cause skin cancer (under severe exposure). Heat from the sun draws away moisture and making skin sensitive and dry.

Other than heat from the sun, heat from the general environmental (e.g. central heating) may lead to water evaporation from the skin. On the other hand, cold air from outdoor and air conditioning is also dry and dehydrating. Such moisture loss is unable to be compensated by skin’s normal sebum and moisture production. Therefore, the resulted skin may be parched, flaky and cracked.

Internal factor, for example hormone can sometimes be an enemy of skin. Hormone affects the production of sebum and moisture level of skin. Oestrogen, a sex hormone acts as a natural humectants of skin. When Oestrogen decreases with age, our skin becomes dry and sensitive. The use of poor skincare products may also strip the natural sebum off from our skin. This causes dry, irritated and scratchy skin.

Preserving Skincare Products

May 5th, 2011

All skincare products are contained in jars or bottles. Common materials of these cosmetic jars include glass, plastic, soft tube and metal. Most consumers pay attention to the skincare product itself instead of the container. Actually, these containers, no matter beautiful or not, play an important role in the quality, hygiene and preservation of skincare products.

Which type of container is the safest? For all the skincare products, around 80 percent are stored in plastic containers and 8 percent in glass containers. Though plastic containers are far more widely used compared to glass ones, it does not imply for higher quality and suitability.

Manufacturers choose plastic containers because they are more flexible in size, shape and color. Besides, plastic containers are easier to transport as they are light weighted. But, plastic containers cannot preserve skincare products well under heat and sunlight. In addition, the plastic nature makes it unsuitable for some oil based products. Therefore, plastic container is certainly not the best type of container for skincare products.

A much better cosmetic container will be a glass one. Compared to plastic, glass is more tolerant to heat and light. In addition, it is safe to store different type of solvent and skincare products (including oil based). Therefore, it is the best material for cosmetic container.

Skincare product container made of metal is less common compared plastic and glass ones. It is usually made as the lids for containers. It is because metal is the least flexible in shape compared to plastic and glass.

Other than the best contain, you need to develop proper habit in order to best preserve your skincare products. The most important habit is not to touch the skincare product directly. You should use a spatula to get the cream for application. For liquid product, you may pour onto a cotton pad. This helps maintain the efficacy of your skincare products.

Skincare with Champagne

April 29th, 2011

Most of the time, Champagne is used as a festival beverage. As Champagne is made from grape, there are many valuable and effective skincare elements in it. The strongest skincare property of grape is anti-oxidizing. Does Champagne possess such strong anti-oxidizing property?

Champagne contains the essences of grape seeds, which are strong anti-oxidants for our skin. Grape seeds are of high skincare value because they are rich in many different types of anti-oxidants (organic acids). These anti-oxidants are not only good for our health, but also our skin for anti-aging. Extracts from grape seeds are becoming more and more popular in skincare industry.

There is another skincare element in Champagne besides grape seed essences. Bioflavonoid in Champagne is also a strong anti-oxidant. It is actually the strongest natural anti-oxidant in the world.

In addition to the anti-oxidizing power of Bioflavonoid, there is another property that allows Bioflavonoid to promote skin health. Bioflavonoid is soluble in both water and fat. This promotes skin health by protecting us from UV radiations from the sun; preventing collagen damages by free radicals and absorbing necessary nutrients such as oxygen.

Apart from grape seed essences and Bioflavonoid, yeast in Champagne is also a valuable and effective skincare ingredient. Because of the plenty of nutrients including amino acid, vitamins, minerals and organic acids in Champagne yeast, it facilitates the normal functions of skin cells. For example, Champagne yeast boosts the renewal and regeneration of skin cells, maintain normal metabolism, moisture level and pH value of skin cells.

Champagne contains a tripetide (L-glutamine, Lcysteine and glycine), also named as GSH. This GSH possesses detoxifying and immune properties apart from anit-oxidizing power. GSH protects skin by actively capturing free radicals which cause skin aging. It also facilitates detoxification by helping to remove body’s metabolic wastes. GSH enhances our immunity by protecting our skin from external irritations such as pollutants.

Eastern Skincare History

April 12th, 2011

Whitening is one of the hottest skincare concerns, especially in the eastern world. Easterners (particularly Japanese and Chinese) think that white skin covers a hundred of other skin imperfections. As Japanese and Chinese have yellowish complexion, whitening skincare products are the best selling products among all other skincare products in China and Japan.

In ancient China, people with white skin (or lighter complexion) were considered as elegant, well educated, noble and of higher social class. Since the ancient Zhou Dynasty (1046 to 256 BC), there has been an oracle word representing women washing their faces.

Since the ancient Qin Dynasty (221 to 205 BC), there have been records on Chinese medicines that have beauty functions. For example, there were records about using Angelica Dahurica (Bai Zhi) for making facial cream.

Skincare products including facial and hand creams were popular among both ordinary and noble women. Skincare products were considered as necessary by every woman.

Skincare was also a big concern of women in ancient Japan. At that time, there was only dim light in house at the night time. People with light complexion were easier to be noticed at night and were less likely to be crashed. As such, women with light complexion have been considered as more beautiful. That is why you may notice that women’s face is always colored in white in Japanese paintings.

The first whitening skincare product, SOIE DE REINE Beauty C Powder was introduced in Japan in 1966. This powder was produced by the famous Japanese skincare brand, Kanebo. Kanebo introduced many other whitening skincare products later on and it is still a famous skincare brand nowadays. In the last century, the concepts of UV protection and Melanin reduction have been introduced by Kanebo. Now, these concepts are still prevailing in skincare (skin whitening) industry.

Skincare with Propolis

February 22nd, 2011

Many of you have heard about the functions of honey, royal jelly and even bee wax. These are products from honey bees and they are good for health and skin. Actually, there is at least one more product form honey bees. Though propolis is less common compared to honey, royal jelly and bee wax, it is a luxurious supplement for skin.

What is propolis? Propolis is a mixture of resin, bee wax, pollen and secretions from bees. Resin and bee wax are the main components of propolis. They comprise 85 percent of propolis in total. The remaining 15 percent is mainly essential oil and bee pollen. According to scientists, there are 38 essential acids for human. Propolis contains 30 of these essential acids. Besides, propolis is effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria and protozoa.

Propolis is luxurious and has been proved to be good for skin and health. Propolis contains more than 50 different types of flavonoids. Flavonoid promotes skin health by facilitating blood circulation, decomposing pigments and preventing skin aging. Besides, propolis contains almost all kinds of vitamins, especially vitamin P (in rutin), which strengthen cell walls.

Resin is the most abundant component in propolis. Resin is largely made of collagen and elastin. About one third of the proteins in our body are collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are important substances in the growth of skin cells, blood vessels, muscles, bone and teeth. It also helps hydrate skin, facilitate collagen synthesis and rejuvenate skin cells.

Bee wax comprises approximately 30 percent of propolis. Bee wax itself is composed of high quality fatty acids and esters. Bee wax is effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, therefore are often used as ingredients in skincare products. In addition, eating bee wax directly helps remove dead skin, which promotes smooth and acne free skin.

Bee pollens comprise only 5 percent of propolis, but they are very nutritive to skin. It is because the major component pollens is protein (amino acids). As skin is largely made of protein, the amino acids in bee pollens promote skin growth and wound recovery.

Secrets of Facial Toners

January 2nd, 2011

By taking a look at your facial toner, you will discover that it is largely made of water. But, you should know that the water used for the production of facial toners is very different from what we get from the tap. Such water either comes from valuable sources like deep oceans and thermal springs or is enriched with special ingredients like ginseng essence and plant extracts. Therefore, facial toner is an important and essential skincare product to our skin.

Precious water alone does not reflect the true value and function of facial toners. With the improvement in skincare technology, facial toners nowadays are very different from those is the old days. Scientists have perfectly combined water and oil (water soluble oil) in facial toners after a great deal of effort. This water soluble oil acts like the natural sebum secreted by skin cells and gives facial toner both moisturizing and nourishing functions at the same time.

If you take a bit time to understand the structure of human skin, you may find out it is rather impermeable. So, how can facial toners penetrate through the epidermis? It has been a big question for many researchers for quite some time. Until recently, it is discovered there are some tiny channels between cell membranes that allow the pass through of facial toners and regulate the moisture and elasticity level of skin.

Besides the moisturizing or nourishing functions, there is another important function for facial toners. Facial toners help remove dead skin left after facial cleansing. Such removal action helps skin cell renew and regenerate. In the past, toners with this purpose usually provide less moisturizing and nourishing functions. But now, the technology is advanced enough to combine all the functions together.

Moisturizer may be the choice of many people if they are only allowed with one skincare product. In fact, many facial toners (usually Japanese brand) today offer similar functions to moisturizers. These facial toners are named as lotions by the Japanese instead and they have functions like moisturizing, whitening as well as anti-aging.

The technology of facial toner production is kept improving. New ingredient like ALA, the amino acid in both human body and plant is added to facial toner for rejuvenating skin cells. Another substance, Nanocube which can repair damaged cells is under research before actual use in facial toners.
