Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid, and it is the most consumed vitamin in North America. It is one of those vitamins that have been increasingly researched and its benefits are found to be amazing.

Before the importance of taking Vitamin C was discovered, sailors in history traveled for long periods of time on the sea, and ran out of fresh fruits and vegetables. They developed a disease called scurvy, which was later discovered that the human body cannot survive without Vitamin C.

Unfortunately, animals are able to produce Vitamin C, but the human body cannot and has to get it from different foods like fruits and vegetables. Some of the fruits rich in Vitamin C are oranges, tangerines, lemons, strawberries, cantaloupes, watermelon, and currants. As for vegetables we have brussels sprouts, green leafy vegetables, collard greens, lettuce, cabbage, peas, asparagus, and so on.

1) The first benefit of using Vitamin C is it contains antioxidants which protect cells from the destruction caused by molecules that are unstable known as free radicals. The formation of free radicals is call oxidation. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals by preventing oxidation. In many skin care products Vitamin C is used because of it has antioxidants which also remove discoloration from the skin caused by sun damage or pollution.

2)Collagen and why we need it; Without collagen, the organs and tissues in the body would not be connected and they would have no structure. For example skin, blood vessels, muscles, arteries, tendons and ligaments and also bones all get their structure from collagen which is classified as a connective tissue. Collagen helps with the blood pressure when the arteries change shape every time the heart beats and pushes blood into the blood vessels. Vitamin C is crucial for the formation of collagen. Vitamin C not only acts as a connector but also the L-ascorbic acid metabolizes fat preventing the onset of atherosclerosis

3) Vitamin C is important for the absorption of iron. Iron is used to in the synthesis of blood specifically hemoglobin which carries oxygen all over the body. Being water-soluble, Vitamin C is readly able to be used by blood for its absorption, transporting and storing of iron.

4) Vitamin C is an anti inflammatory.Another benefit of Vitamin C is its antihistamine activity. Antihistamine fights allergies. One of the problems with Vitamin C deficiency is an increased possibility of getting asthma attacks or developing asthma. The most popular remedy that Vitamin C is know for is its benefit to common colds. It reduces the severity of colds.

5) The adrenal gland sits on top if the kidneys and it’s a endocrine gland which produces different kinds of hormones. The main function is to regulate stress through synthesis of dopamine, noradrenalin and adrenaline which need Vitamin C for synthesis. The adrenal gland has the highest concentration of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is also necessary for the production of carnitine, which aids in the oxidation of fatty acids.

6) Smokers get lead poisoning from cigarettes which contain 11% lead. Half the lead is inhaled into the lungs. Vitamin C lowers the lead in the blood. In urban areas children have had problems with lead poisoning.
